BABYMONSTER (Three Song Listen)
A person recommended this for fans of Blackpink and Kpop Demon Hunters. I have my doubts but I'll give them the usual three songs to prove themselves to me.
DRIP was alright. Catchy and that high note was impressive. As for most kpop, though, I don't get it. I get the idea behind Blackpink. Black like dark and edgy, pink like feminine. So far, I haven't "got" any other kpop band.
SHEESH had very nice raps, incredibly annoying hook and I liked the switch up in the end. That hook was horrid, thank god there wasn't much of it.
HOT SAUCE was meh. Brainrot music. The raps were the best part - she sounded about 12 years old but I do appreciate the talent.
Yeah, no.
I do not get kpop, at large.
The singers and rappers and dancers are talented, and the songs are usually catchy but not annoying (like DRIP), but the lyrics are mediocre at best, and there's nothing interesting or different in the music. It's the most basic ass pop music there is. I know Americans are impressed by the mixing of genres (pop, rap, rock, etc) and languages (Korean and English), but as a Finnish person, mixing of genres is more of a rule than an exception here since the music circles are so small, and using English in rap is lazy, someone else already came up with the rhymes and bars and it's easier to slant rhyme English than Finnish.
Not to mention how toxic the entire industry is, I do not understand how people keep brushing that under the rug... The artists keep fainting on stage because they're told to lose weight, they can't date because the fans would be jealous but the men are pressured to kiss each other because the fangirls ship them, and then they "age out" of the scene at an absurdly young age.
Listening to kpop should be a guilty pleasure, like watching porn. Both take advantage of their young stars, made to perform even when they don't want to, and deep down you know consuming their product is bad for your brain. But you can't help but to be fascinated about it sometimes.
