Weekly Recap (July 14th - 20th, 2025)

On Monday and Tuesday I listened to 2/3 of The Sugar Hill Records Story playlist (originally released as a box of 5 CDs) for my current chapter in Can't Stop Won't Stop.
The sound is getting quite monotone, but at least I'll have a great picture of what old school hiphop sounds like...

On Wednesday I walked to the library and listened to The Stygian Rose by Crypt Sermon.
It was alright, old school prog metal. As with all old prog bands, I wish they'd experiment more. Prog is one of the oldest subgenres in metal and there's only a certain amount of melodies people can write for the electric guitar.

Later, in the evening, I finally listened to GNX by Kendrick Lamar. I've been putting it off, because the album was praised so highly it felt intimidating, like I "have to" get it or I'm a failure as a hiphop newbie. Which is silly. If I don't get it now, I can simply come back to it in a decade or two and understand it better then. But I can't help how my anxiety works.
Lucky for me, I do think it's a good album. The beats work, the hooks work, his lyrics work, his flows work, the featuring artists work... For critique, I'd say I still find his voice a tad annoying (but I'm getting used to it) and that I don't like the "hey hey hey hey hey hey, that's my bitch" on Peekaboo, to me it sounds off-rhythm. My favorite song was Reincarnated.
Sorry for not giving a deeper analysis. Maybe one day. I slept like crap last night, it's 29C and my depression's been acting up today...

On Thursday I ran some errands and listened to Love Is The Message by MFSB
The book Can't Stop Won't Stop says TSOP is an album, but it seems like it's a single? At least I couldn't find an album names TSOP, just a song with that title.
It's good music, but not necessarily my style.
I also went shopping for a bit and listened to Are x Rekami - Kabinettimusiikkia (2024), a Finnish rap album that has been getting very positive reviews. I loved it, it's a great album. Very lyric-heavy, but without sacrificing any of the quality of the musical aspects. (I promise to translate the songs at some point. I usually translate songs for my other blog little by little on my lunch breaks at work, and I'm on vacation now. But I'll get back to translating in 1,5 weeks when I go back to work.)

At home I listened to Tragic Songs Of Life by The Louvin Brothers (1956) from YouTube. It's the next album in the 1001 Albums to Listen Before You Die book. Which I'll abbreviate as 1001ATLBYD from now on, I think... Or "the 1001 book".
I just did the math and if I listen to one album a week, assuming I haven't heard any of them before, listening to all of the albums would take me 19 years. Yikes. Luckily, I have heard some of them before and when we get to genres I like more, like blues, rock, pop, punk and especially metal and rap, I may be able to listen to multiple albums a week.
Oh, The Louvin Brothers made the original In the Pines? Cool! I knew the metal version by Khemmis I've heard was a cover, but didn't know who made the original. Also, Nirvana's Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
I didn't care for the music at first, country isn't really my thing, but it grew on me.

I wrote a blog post about where I find albums to listen, and finished The Sugar Hill Records Story playlist. Man, The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five is a good song! I've heard it a few times now. The playlist has some grayed out songs, I hope they're nothing super interesting and important...
Now, I'll go read the next chapter of the book (Can't Stop Won't Stop, CSWS), since I finished all the albums from this chapter.

On Friday I listened to I Beat Loneliness by Bush. Unfortunately, I didn't write any notes about it and don't remember much. It was rock, I think, and made me feel nostalgic because of the sound, and I liked it.

On Friday and Saturday I also listened to Release Radar:

Release Radar

- Lead Horizon - Parasite (This is... normal? 😄 Those are some screams!)

- Ren - Vincent's Tale - Prologue - Sunflowers (Prologue? A new album? 😍 Also, saw the notification for the video yesterday, but haven't watched it yet.)

- Unlike Pluto - Don't Waste Your Time, Kid

- In This Moment ft. Kim Dracula - Heretic (Interesting! In This Moment getting back to metal? I hope so!)

- allalonealaska - 1NCH X 1NCH (🤘)

- Groundbreaking - Can You Hear Me Now (Nice!)

- messier - John 14:2 (A biblical topic? Interesting... I put it on my Listen To This! playlist, so I can analyze it later)

- Qveen Herby - Hacky Sack (Yeeey, she's rapping again!)

- clipping. - Night of Heaven (Love clipping. My favorite musical find of the year so far.)

- DJ Haram x Armand Hammer - Stenography (Something similar in this and clipping... A sort of... Alternative spirit. -- Yeah, Wikipedia says they're East Coast hiphop, abstract hiphop, experimental hiphop. They're an American duo. I didn't know that.)

- The Ocean - Mesopelagic: Into The Uncanny - Audiotree Version (🖤)

- Celldweller - Solaris - Single Edit (I like the omnious atmosphere)

- BLACKPINK - JUMP (I love that BLACKPINK is back. They're the only kpop group where I really got the "thing" they have. This is song isn't as catchy as their old songs, though.)

- Kevin Abstract - NOLA (Love the sound. Gotta listen to it again when I got time.)

Probably won't listen to 1001 book albums or CSWS albums next week. My brother is visiting us. I might have time to listen to some newer albums, especially if they interest him (he loves metal).
