Ashnikko - Drunk With My Friends (Lyrical Breakdown)

First line reminds me of the Bible story, where humans started worshipping wrong gods, like a golden calf etc. (It's in the Book of Exodus.)

Ash is a leftist liberal, right, and one of the things extreme leftist liberals are saying is that all men want to uphold the patriachy, and therefore all men are the source of all evil. Ash is queer and as a fellow queer person I completely understand that it feels a lot safer and therefore more appealing to stay in your leftist liberal bubble and only associate with other leftist liberal people. You can't associate with people with opposing views on a daily basis, for your own mental health, because those people often literally think you should go to hell or you'd be better off dead. Staying with like-minded people gives you the opportunity to focus on other aspects of your life besides defending your existance or in worst cases, life. The problem is, that only associating with people on one side of the spectrum means you're only hearing one side of the argument over and over again, and the extremist views slowly seep their way into your mind as well. Such as the dichotomy that all men are bad and all women are good. (Side note: Please also associate with people in the middle occasionally, to gain some perspective.)

Which brings us to the line on the song. Ash is a leftist liberal, who is queer, AND drunk (which even further makes you see things as black and white) and therefore, in that moment, she thinks all women are goddesses, she loves all women, she wants to have sex with all the women, etc. She sort of worships the pussy like it's her religion, even though she knows it's wrong ("a bad decision"). 

She's drunk with her FRIENDS and they're having a threesome. Drunken sex is never a good idea, threesomes can be problematic (for the relationships between people, if someone feels left out) and sleeping with friends can cause problems in the friendship as well. And because it's a threesome, Ash and two girls, she's making a couple (two) bad decisions. The friends could also literally be a couple (they're friends with Ash, but lovers with each other).

'Suit up' means to be dressed nicely, or to figuratively pull yourself up, get your act together.

She pulls herself up, stands up (literally or figuratively) and gets a head rush (when you stand up too fast, blood rushes into your head and you feel dizzy).

She gets angry (wants to flip the girls off).

'Boot up' means a computer is turning on, probably a metaphore for her brain turning on, starting to work.

Basically, she's very disoriented and her head is spinning. She doesn't know how to feel - one minute she's totally into the idea of the threesome, next minute she's like "nope, nope, no no no, stop, this is a bad idea, and fuck you".

There's also drugs involved (the pillies) and it's not some casual, harmless drug use for some weekend fun, either. She's a drug addict, because she'd rather buy drugs than pay her rent.

"We ride, like a Benz (Like a Benz)

Shotgun, look ma, no hands (Look ma, no hands)"

She's on the "shotgun" seat, the front seat of the car, next to the driver (figuratively). She's so drunk and high, she thinks she's in control of the car, even though she's the passenger. But she's not in control, someone else is. And because she's "taking her hands off the wheel" (which she doesn't even have, because she's the passenger), she doesn't care for her own safety. She's self-destructive, with the drug use and with sleeping with her friends. It's also possible the 'driver' isn't holding the wheel, either. No one is. Everyone is out of control.

Shotgun, look ma, no hands (Look at me, mama)"

It's the same lyrics as in the beginning of the chorus, apart from the ad-libs, and that's why I chose to use this latter part as well. The last one being "Look at me, mama".

She does say "shotgun, look ma, no hands" before, but that's such a common phrase you might not pay attention that she's talking to her mom here.

Ash's parents are very strict. They do not approve their child being queer or doing drugs. And here Ash is, living alone in London, barely an adult, buying drugs instead of paying rent, having sex with her girl friends... She knows she's not exactly making her mom proud. Her behavior is reckless and self-destructive and I think if her mom heard this song, she'd be worried. Just like a kid feels proud if they're riding a bike without hands, excitedly telling their mom to look, and the mom is not impressed but worried. 

"Ooh, I'm a tornado"

She's spinning out of control, destroying everything.

"He a puppy to me, hе go where I say so"

This is the ex she's made a lot of songs about. In her song Stupid, the last bar is "Puppy wanna lick some sticky just like honey" and people were confused, because Deal With It, another big hit song, starts off with the words "I don't need a man, I need a puppy". In Deal With It, she meant it literally. She'd much rather have a puppy than a man. In Stupid, however, she was referring to the man, calling him a puppy. When she explained this, she used these exact words: "He's a puppy dog to me". (Also, the lyrics of Stupid are very literal, the last bar is pretty much the only one to have a metaphor.)

She's spinning out of control (no hands on wheel), destroying everything like a tornado, and because she's causing all of this to happen (she IS the tornado after all), she feels like she's in control. But we all know tornados are not in control of what they're doing. They're not thinking, they're just going around and tearing everything apart.

"I'm a devil with thе halo"

There's a good side and a bad side to Ashnikko, at the same time.

"Hit it for a minute, then I dip like mayo

(Then I dip, dip, dip, dip)"

Hit it can mean drugs, or having sex, or just being awake in general.

And then she dips like mayo, she passes out.

Or "dips" into something wet... (sexual innuendo)

(Hey grandpa, drop the beat)"

Whether it's the drugs or the sex, I don't think the person is crying because it's good. I think they're probably panicking internally, but telling themself and others that they're crying happy tears, that they're fine. (Which reminds me of her song Panic Attacks in Paradise. If you've ever had a panic attack/anxiety/depression, you get the feeling. In theory, everything in your life is fine. But you still feel overwhelming panic/anxiety/depression coming over you, out of nowhere.)

"I'm shy" is a common catchphrase used by Ash. Ashton Nicole Casey is very shy in real life, and that is one of the reasons she created the alter ego Ashnikko - to be a persona she could express her feelings and sexuality through. The only two times she says "I'm not shy" are in songs where she's sleeping with women. This one and Slumber Party. 

"Grandpa" is a nickname Ash gave to Oscar Scheller, a producer she works with often. She shouts him out with the catchphrase "Hey grandpa, drop the beat".

Overall, the song is a sad describtion of the negative side of the party girl culture Ash was a part of in her late teens and early 20s. The headline looks like it's gonna be about chilling and having a good time, but then it's really not. On surface level (headline) everything is fine, but deep down (the actual song) nothing is fine.
