Now we're finally getting into actual rap music, but the OG DJs and MCs were apparently not too keen on it. To them, rap was a concert, a whole, and to them the concept of a rap song or an album less than several hours long (the entire recording of a party, a concert basically) was impossible.
It's so weird to think as a person who has often wondered how rap songs can be so short! :D I'm used to progressive metal, a typical song is about 7-8 minutes long. 4min is short, 10-15min is pretty long but still quite common. Over 20min is long enough that metalheads might actually comment on how long it is. The longest I've heard was 60min, the entire album was one song. Where as modern rap, 4min is quite long, 1,5min is quite short. 2-4min is normal.

Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five – Superappin

I can hear the influence of the funk and rock'n'roll and reggae that I've been listening to in the past chapters!

This sounds exactly like I imagine old school hiphop sounding. And I noticed that the lyrics have a bar "Can't, Won't, Don't Stop Rockin' To The Rhythm" - I assume that's where Jeff Chang got the title?

Spoonie Gee – Love Rap

Yeah, sure. In hindsight, his flow isn't the most innovative, but you know - we had to start somewhere. If no one had done this flow before him, that means he WAS innovative! He was just the first to do it (or one of the first) and then others copied him because they fucked with what he was doing.

The Treacherous Three With Kool Moe Dee – Body Rock

I like this! The more aggressive, well-announced rapping style and the peculiar bass sound. I also like in old school hiphop when two or more MCs take turns on the bars. I don't know why, it just rocks that much harder than a single MC... The hook could be more interesting, though...

The Treacherous Three With Kool Moe Dee – At The Party

They sort of let the hype drop around 1:30... Idk why. Otherwise it was a banger. If I was at that party, I'd be yelling with the crowd as well, hyping them up.

Fearless Four – It's Magic

Yeah, it's a vibe. No complaints.

The Disco Four – Move With The Groove

Whether it's real or faked for the recording, these guys kept the hype up. I wanted to be in that party. And that was the point of hiphop back then, kinda (on the surface level) - to throw a better party than any other DJ or MC.

These songs probably fake the house party audience. They have a few guys (hype men?) in the studio being a good audience, singing and whooing along to the MC.

The Masterdon Committee – Funk Box Party

👍 Hook doesn't even have lyrics and I still like it.

And there's a female MC! The first one I've heard on these song samples in the entire book! Apparently she calls herself Pebblee Poo. God only knows why, but at least her rapping wasn't poo...

The Treacherous Three With Kool Moe Dee – Feel The Heart Beat

Yeah, it's alright. Not as hyped as some of the ones before this.

Doug E. Fresh – Just Having Fun

He's beatboxing this?! Wow, he's good! I like the rapper as well, he keeps the hype up better than The Treacherous Three. Like, I mean I feel more hyped listening to this than the previous group.

The Treacherous Three, Spoonie Gee – The New Rap Language

I like the rap flows! They're quite fast, but easy to follow, easy to hear how they fit the beat (which I usually struggle with).

Funky Four + One – Rappin And Rocking The House

👍 Sha Rock, huh? Gotta remember that name. The lyrics get a bit repetitive... I get why, since the history of the music genre, but... It is what it is. I don't know how to say this without sounding like a hater, so I'm just gonna say it: They all rap very well, some of the best on this album. But this song is waaaaay too long to have this little substance in the lyrics. For a song to be 15min long, there needs to be 15min worth of stuff to say. Not something that could be abbreviated into a handful of sentences - one verse, two max.

The Fearless Four – Rockin' It

This beat slaps! And I can't complain about the rap either.
