Scene Queen - Hot Singles In Your Area (Album Initial Thoughs)

I'm trying this new thing where I post three posts a week: A Weekly Recap, and then two other posts, instead of having one on-week and then, like, four off-weeks... I'm thinking Tuesdays and Thursdays/Fridays, depending on new song releases etc. Algorithms like consistency and I want my voice to be more heard than what it is now so... We'll see how it goes, this is just a try-out. If this sucks for me, I'm going back to the old style I had where I just post whenever I finish a piece I'm writing.
I already posted my Grandson Deep Dive this week, so this post will come out next Tuesday, at the earliest, if nothing more urgent comes along.

I wrote this post last week.

BDSM

Haven't heard before.

"Bimbocore next level" Nice! Her EPs before this were called Bimbocore and Bimbocore Vol 2, so this is a nice callback to those! When it comes to pop-esque song writing, she's top tier!
I have a theory that she used to make a living as a pop/rap ghostwriter, because she's mentioned working as a pop/rap songwriter, not mentioning other jobs of the time, and still, when I try too look up songwriter credits for Scene Queen or Hannah Collins or Hannah Rose Collins (her real name), nothing comes up.

"They suck like their girl on my clit" xD Idk why this is so funny. Call me juvenile, I don't care, I agree with you on this one xD

"Scene Queen hates men" - this must be a quote, or an exaggeration?
To paraphrase one of my YT comments: "Yes, many men suck. But most men are fine."
I think this part of the song / this song in it's entirety was written at a moment when she was very angry at a certain man behaving like a lot of them have, and that inspired this line. Just IMO, I don't actually know her intentions.

The rest is just... bad-fucking-ass! And the screams <3 OMFG!!! <3

Didn't expect her to make my jaw drop ever again, and she did!

18+

The First Scene Queen Song To Play Anyone. If not otherwise, to test if they're cool or not. If they think sexualizing teenage fans is cool or not cool. (FYI: It is not.) 10/10. PERFECTION. 💅

Whips & Chains

Heard before, didn't like it then. Some of her more rapper flows, I like this more now than when I first heard it. Then there's a metal breakdown unexpectedly!

Pink Push-Up Bra

Heard before. Very good!

Mutual Masturbation

Haven't heard before. I like the lyrics, not so much the hook. Second verse sounds annoying AF. :'D Sorry Scene Queen. I love you <3

Girls Gone Wild ft. WARGASM (UK)

Had heard before, but somehow forgot I had. I don't know how, this collab is one of the best collabs I've seen this year! These two go so well together!

POV ft. The Ready Set

Haven't heard before. I like the verses, not the chorus. She's sort of rapping again <3

Hot Singles In Your Area

Haven't heard before. A slow one! Ok. -- And then it wasn't. It was metal, then trap, then badass pop, then slow again. Gotta love alternative music <3 Get all the genres in one song :D

MILF

Heard before. Hilarious! Americans can be such prudes sometimes, we need songs where women talk about their sexuality and liking sex. Not like the mainstream artists, where it's very male-oriented, but the kind of sex they actually like, for real. Normalize women actually enjoying sex!

Amateur

Haven't heard before. Those high notes, wow! <3 The rest is annoying, but I still kinda like it. :D

Stuck ft. 6arelyhuman

Have heard before, wasn't a fan. I get that it's very 2000s pop vibe, but still. Otherwise it's quite mediocre.

Finger

This song is so brilliant! The most annoying earworm, but I love it. Same as when I first heard it. I really like the music video - a Tiktok dance a person can do even if they're in a wheelchair or bed-ridden. I forgot what it's called, but Scene Queen has a condition which makes it impossible for her to stand for long periods of time. That's why she's mostly seated or laying down in the video as well.

PEG

Haven't heard before. It's giving disco Billie Eilish doing hyperpop. And I'm here for it. "Beg/peg it on your knees" lmao! Bars!

Oral Fixation

Haven't heard before. YEEEEY, THE SONG WITH THE RAP FLOW! She released a YT short about this months ago and I've been excited about this ever since! The rapping is soooo coooool! And the metal and pop and the chaos just make it... wow. If it wasn't just as repetitive as it is, it would go to The Vibe playlist. It's stealing my attention 100%, I'm having a hard time writing during this song, even after listening to it twice!

Climax

Heard for the first time the other day. I like the juxtaposition compared to the other songs. Almost all of them are about sex, and with a song title like Climax, it isn't a far-fetched thought to think this song would be about sex as well. The accompanying music video demonstrates the song's message very well. Scene Queen has a history with mental health problems, incl. an eating disorder. In the video we see how her energy levels shift multiple times in one day - performing restores it slowly, hanging out with her boyfriend restores it quick, crowded rooms and looking in the mirror drain it. For me, this gives the impression that she struggles with her mental health every day, and that she's the happiest when there's something (the music) or someone (the boyfriend) distracting her from her own brain and the self-loathing thoughts in it.

Closing thoughts

The album could be described as 2000s nostalgia trippy hyperpop music with elements from other genres such as metalcore and hiphop. Most of the songs are about sex, more specifically the kind of sex women actually like to have, but there are a few more serious songs among them, like Pink Push-Up Bra (which is a revenge fantasy against a sexual assaultor), 18+ (which is about the sexual exploitation and statutory rapes of minors which are way too prominent in the scene subculture to be treated as individual cases) and Climax.

And if you dig deeper (which I will), the songs often have dual meanings.
